From Wi-Fi to Li-Fi: Flickers of new light technology!

From the start of a brand new day to the very end, in this new technological era, our lives are run by Wi-Fi. There is no debate on the fact that we cannot live without it. What used to be a form of luxury has turned out to become a basic human necessity.

But correspondingly,  no matter where you are, at times we experience connectivity issues, and signaling problems, which can lead to swift mood changes, and annoyance.

Technology does have limitations and so does Wifi, but the world does not stop. and indeed, we do not stop.

and there you have it,

‘Step into the world of light-The light based wifi: LI-FI

What is Li-Fi?

Imagine, a world where you can connect to the internet, by just flicking a light switch.

Mesmerizing isn't it? The concept is exactly similar. Li-fi is a wireless optical communication technology that uses light or small LEDs instead of radio waves to transmit information.

It can tune in to harness a great speed, approximately 1000 times faster than the Wifi technology. The term Li-Fi was first coined by one of the pioneers in the technology industry,  Professor Harald Haas during a TED Global talk in Edinburg in 2011.

How does it work?

A basic Li-fi network contains a chain of light bulbs entailed in a wireless network.

When an electric pulse is shot to a LED, a stream of particles known as photons is emitted.LED s being excellent semiconductors, has the ability to change the brightness of light flowing through them at an extremely high rate. Thus a signal can be sent in this phase, by modulating at different rates. This signal can be perceived through a detector, which interprets the changes in light intensities as information.

WiFI VS Li-Fi

With the new luminous technological concept of LI-Fi being introduced, there is one question that arises in a well-suited mind, Is Li-fi better than wifi?

Of course, like any other technological norm, each product has its pros and cons.

From a perspective of greater comfort to the user, Li-fi outnumbers wifi. With a higher data transfer speed than wifi, which rates up to 2Gbps, and also considering crucial factors such as coverage area, bandwidth, data density, and frequency, li-fi has the ability to give maximum user comfort. Like all the things which provide higher comfortability, a rare factor arises. The infrastructure required to implement LiFi technology on a large scale is still nonexistent because it is still an emerging concept. The main disadvantage is that, as the name implies, Li-fi technology only works in the presence of a light source.

The drastic and futuristic advancements have bought luminous comfort to mankind with Li-Fi. As the father of Li-Fi implores“In the future, we will not only have 14 billion light bulbs, we may have 14 billion LiFis deployed worldwide for a cleaner, greener, and even brighter future.”, the technology is yet to change the world brighter, with Li-Fi!
